Siemens Mobility, Inc. to Build in Davidson County, Create 506 Jobs and Invest $220 Million

Siemens Mobility, Inc., global manufacturer of rail transportation vehicles and control systems, will build a major advanced manufacturing and rail services center in Davidson County, creating 506 jobs. The company will invest $220 million in Lexington, creating a new carbon neutral facility that will serve the company’s East Coast markets. Siemens Mobility’s advanced manufacturing center in North Carolina will involve multiple buildings on the 200-acre site, which will also feature more than 11,000 feet of rail track. The company will manufacture passenger rail vehicles at the Lexington facility, allowing it to better serve its East Coast customers while meeting growing demand for its products. Wages will vary depending on the position; the average salary for the new positions will be $51,568. The current average wage in Davidson County is $49,956.

Wolfspeed will Invest $5 billion for New Facility in Chatham County

Wolfspeed, a global leader in silicon carbide semiconductor manufacturing, has chosen Siler City, NC for its newest semiconductor manufacturing plant. The company plans to invest more than $5 billion and will create 1,800 jobs.

Wolfspeed, headquartered in Durham, was founded over 30 years ago on the campus of North Carolina State University. The company has 60% of the world’s market share for silicon carbide materials used in semiconductors and other manufacturing efforts. The new factory will have 10 times more output than Wolfspeed’s current silicon carbide factory, which is the largest of its kind in the world, and will increase the company’s capacity to manufacture and process silicon carbide materials used in semiconductors. Semiconductors are used in electric vehicles (EVs), 5G networks, offshore wind and other clean energy applications. Wolfspeed’s semiconductors will allow those products to run more efficiently and use less energy.

Toyota to Invest Additional $2.5 billion, Create 350 More Jobs at Greensboro-Randolph Megasite

Toyota will invest an additional $2.5 billion in its newest North American facility, Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina (TBMNC). This investment adds capacity to support battery electric vehicle (BEV) battery production and adds 350 jobs, bringing the total employment to approximately 2,100. Scheduled to begin production in 2025, the facility will produce batteries for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and BEVs.

“This marks another significant milestone for our company,” said Norm Bafunno, senior vice president, Unit Manufacturing and Engineering at Toyota Motor North America. “This plant will serve a central role in Toyota’s leadership toward a fully electrified future and will help us meet our goal of carbon neutrality in our vehicles and global operations by 2035.”

In 2021, Toyota, in partnership with Toyota Tsusho, announced the new Liberty location with an initial investment of $1.29 billion for battery production and the creation of 1,750 new jobs. “This is an exciting time for Toyota, the region and the many North Carolinians we will soon employ,” said Sean Suggs, TBMNC president. “This incremental investment reflects our continued commitment to ensuring jobs and future economic growth for the Triad region.”

Metal Works to Expand in High Point; Add 20 Jobs

Metal Works of High Point will expand its operations, investing $2,819,000 and adding 20 jobs. The company has purchased 1245 Hickory Chapel Rd. The 37,050-sf property will house a powder-coating line and additional room for assembly to help meet growing demand.

The family-owned company, headquartered in High Point, manufactures metal components, weldments and assemblies for the material handling, furniture, transportation, power generation and appliance industries.

“Over our 30-year history in High Point, we have experienced a lot of growth, and now with this expansion we can continue to grow and create more jobs in the community,” said Metal Works president and owner Jonathan Hall.

Currently, Metal Works has 52 full-time employees. The 20 new jobs are projected to be added over the next two years and will meet the Guilford County average annual wage. Positions will include a director of operations, quality engineer, welders, painters, and machine operators among others.

With the property purchase completed, renovations will now begin with the goal to be operational by October 2022.

Lotus Bakeries to Create 62 New Jobs in Alamance County; Invest $84 Million

Snack food company, Lotus Bakeries, will create 62 new jobs in Alamance County. The company will invest more than $84 million to add a new production facility at its Mebane location. New positions include operators, technicians, and material handlers, with a collective average annual salary of $47,873, exceeding Alamance County’s overall average annual wage of $46,999. The new jobs have the potential to create an annual payroll impact of more than $2.9 million for the region.

This is the company’s second expansion in a year. Lotus Bakeries continues to evolve the product lines of its Biscoff and BEAR brands. With 12 global production plants, the company only produces the Biscoff cookie at its headquarters in Belgium and North Carolina, which opened in 2019. Since opening in Mebane, Lotus has grown its only U.S. manufacturing plant to 237,000 square feet, with this project providing an additional 171,000 to the site, adding two more production lines, warehouse operations, and employee amenities.
